Released in 1995, Battle Arena Toshinden (often referred to as Toh Shin Den in Japan) was a groundbreaking 3D weapon-based fighting game that served as a key launch title for the PlayStation. Developed by Tamsoft, it gained immediate fame for its impressive polygonal graphics and for introducing the 3D sidestep maneuver, which allowed players to move into the background or foreground to dodge attacks—a first for the genre.
The game features a diverse cast of eight international fighters, including the wandering swordsman Eiji Shinjo and the mysterious Kayin Amoh, each competing in a secret tournament hosted by the criminal organization "Secret Society." While it was eventually overshadowed by the Tekken and SoulCalibur series, the original Toshinden remains a vital piece of PlayStation history for proving the console's 3D capabilities.
