Collection: Mega CD
The Japanese Mega-CD (メガCD), released by Sega on December 12, 1991, for ¥49,800, is a CD-ROM add-on for the Mega Drive designed to compete with the PC Engine. It expanded game storage, added a 12.5 MHz processor for enhanced graphics (scaling/rotation), and played audio/CD+G discs. The original model featured a motorized front-loading tray.
- Pioneering Launch: The Mega-CD officially launched in Japan on December 12, 1991. It was the first territory to receive the add-on, arriving nearly a year before the North American "Sega CD" version.
- High Launch Cost: At its Japanese debut, the unit retailed for ¥49,800. This high price point was eventually reduced with the release of the top-loading Model 2 in April 1993, which launched at a lower price of ¥29,800.
- RPG-Heavy Initial Library: Because Sega struggled to provide software development kits (SDKs) quickly, early Japanese titles were often RPGs or ports from the X68000 computer. These genres were chosen because they required fewer advanced graphical special effects than arcade ports.
- Unique Regional Hardware: Japan saw exclusive hardware variations, such as the Wondermega (a high-end combined unit by JVC/Victor) and the Aiwa CSD-GM1, a rare boombox with a built-in Mega Drive and Mega-CD.
- Limited Market Adoption: Despite early success, the Mega-CD struggled with long-term adoption in Japan. By March 1994, it had sold only 380,000 units, meaning only about 11% of Japanese Mega Drive owners had purchased the add-on.
