Collection: PS3
The Japanese PlayStation 3 (launched Nov 11, 2006) is a region-free, seventh-generation console known for its "Clear Black" finish, extensive library of Japan-only games, and distinct "Fat," "Slim," and "Super Slim" models. Japanese models often use the O button for "enter" and X for "back," and include unique color variants like Satin Silver and Ceramic White.
- Circle means "Yes": For the PS3 and earlier consoles in Japan, the Circle button was used for "OK" or "Confirm," while the Cross button was for "Cancel". This followed Japanese cultural symbols, where a circle signifies approval and a cross signifies a mistake. This was the opposite of the Western configuration until Sony standardized the controls with the PS5.
- Hardware Exclusives: Japan received several unique PS3 models and colors that were never released elsewhere, such as the "Garnet Red" and "Azurite Blue" Super Slim models. Additionally, only the Japanese market received physical releases for certain games like The Last Guy and Strider, which were digital-only in North America.
- Last Stand of Production: While production ended in most regions by 2016, Japan was the final market to manufacture the PS3. The very last units rolled off the assembly line on May 29, 2017, over a decade after the console's initial launch.
- A "Supercomputer" Launch: At launch in Japan on November 11, 2006, the PS3 was so high-tech and expensive to produce that Sony sold every unit at a significant loss. It was marketed as a "supercomputer for the living room" due to its advanced Cell processor.
- Launch Day Shortage: Only 100,000 units were available for the entire Japanese launch due to production problems with the Blu-ray drive. Because demand was so high and supply so low, some businessmen reportedly hired people to stand in lines just to buy consoles for resale on auction sites.
