Collection: Game Boy Advance

The Game Boy Advance (GBA), released in 2001, was often described as a "Super Nintendo in your pocket." Shifting to a horizontal "landscape" orientation, it featured a 32-bit processor that allowed for stunning 2D sprite work and early 3D effects. It was the first Nintendo handheld to add L and R shoulder buttons, significantly expanding gameplay depth, and it maintained full backward compatibility with the entire Game Boy and Game Boy Color libraries.

  • The Missing Light: Despite its power, the original GBA lacked an internal backlight or frontlight; players famously had to sit directly under lamps or buy "worm light" accessories to see the screen.
  • The e-Reader: An official peripheral allowed players to swipe paper trading cards through a scanner to unlock levels, items, or even entire classic NES games.
  • WarioWare’s Secret Origin: The first WarioWare game was developed in secret by a small team at Nintendo R&D1 as an experiment to see how many "microgames" they could fit on a single cartridge.
  • Solar Powered: The game Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand featured a physical UV sensor on the cartridge that required players to play outside in real sunlight to charge the protagonist's weapon.
  • A "Link" to the Future: Using a special cable, the GBA could be used as a second-screen controller for the GameCube, enabling unique features in games like The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures.
