Collection: Famicom
The Nintendo Family Computer, or Famicom, is the 1983 Japanese version of the NES, released on July 15 for 14,800 yen. It is an 8-bit, third-generation console with iconic red-and-white casing, hardwired controllers, and a top-loading cartridge slot. It launched iconic franchises like Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong.
- Built-in Controller Microphone: The Famicom's second controller featured a small, built-in microphone and a volume slider. It was used in games like The Legend of Zelda to defeat certain enemies (Pols Voice) by yelling or blowing into it.
- Hardwired Controllers: Unlike the NES, which had detachable controllers, the original Famicom's controllers were permanently attached to the back of the console. They could be stored in dedicated slots on the sides of the unit.
- The Famicom Disk System: In 1986, Nintendo released a floppy disk add-on that allowed the console to play "Disk Cards". These disks were rewritable, allowing players to use in-store kiosks to swap games for a small fee.
- Superior Audio Capabilities: The Famicom could support additional audio channels through specialized chips built into the game cartridges. This is why the Japanese version of Castlevania III has more complex music than its Western counterpart.
- Simultaneous Launch with Sega: The Famicom was released on July 15, 1983, the same day Sega launched its first home console, the SG-1000. While both entered the market together, the Famicom eventually dominated the Japanese landscape.
