Collection: PS4

The Sony PlayStation 4 launched in Japan on February 22, 2014, three months after Western releases, offering unique bundles like the "First Limited Pack" (with Knack) and special edition colors. The Japanese market exclusively received a 2TB PS4 Pro model (CUH-7200CB01). Standard models included 500GB/1TB options, primarily in Jet Black or Glacier White.

  • Delayed Home Turf Launch: Despite being a Japanese product, the PS4 launched in Japan on February 22, 2014—nearly three months after its North American and European releases. Sony delayed the release to ensure a stronger lineup of Japanese-developed games, such as Yakuza Restoration, was ready for the local market.
  • The "O" vs. "X" Tradition: For decades, Japanese PlayStation consoles used the Circle (O) button for "Confirm" and the Cross (X) for "Cancel," as a circle symbolizes approval in Japanese culture. This was inverted for Western models until the PS5 finally standardized the Western layout globally.
  • A Slow Start but Strong Finish: The PS4 initially struggled to gain momentum in Japan due to the popularity of handhelds. However, it eventually surpassed its predecessor (PS3) in reaching the 5-million-unit milestone, hitting the mark in 179 weeks compared to the PS3's 180 weeks.
  • Japan-Only Exclusives: The Japanese PS4 library contains numerous titles that never received a Western release. These often include niche anime-based games or titles with complex licensing issues, such as City Shrouded in Shadow.
  • Military-Grade Graphics Concerns: In its early days, the Japanese government reportedly considered placing the PS4 on a list of sensitive items. This was due to fears that its advanced graphics processing power could potentially be repurposed for military use.
