Collection: Nintendo DS
The Nintendo DS, released in 2004, is a pioneering handheld console characterized by its clamshell design featuring dual screens, with the lower screen featuring resistive touchscreen technology. As the best-selling handheld of all time, it introduced dual-screen gaming, built-in microphones, and wireless connectivity, allowing for multiplayer and stylus-based input.
- The "DS" Meaning: While most know it as Dual Screen, Nintendo also stated it stands for Developers' System, as the new hardware was designed to inspire "innovative" play styles from creators.
- The "City" Codename: During development, the console was codenamed "Project Nitro," which is why all DS model numbers and game cartridges begin with the prefix NTR.
- Surviving Space: A Nintendo DS was brought to the International Space Station in 2006. It was used by astronauts for both entertainment and to run a specialized program to monitor their radiation exposure.
- The "Third Pillar": When first announced, Nintendo pitched the DS as a "third pillar" alongside the GameCube and Game Boy Advance, originally intending it to coexist with the Game Boy line rather than replace it.
- Built-in "Torture" Test: The DS was famously durable. During testing, Nintendo executives reportedly insisted the console be able to survive 10 consecutive drops from a height of 1.5 meters onto concrete to ensure it was "kid-proof."
