  • Launch Date & Success: The PlayStation first launched in Japan on December 3, 1994, nearly a year before it reached North America. It sold 100,000 units on its first day alone.
  • Controller Button Logic: In Japan, the face buttons were designed with specific meanings: the Circle ( ) represents "yes" or approval, while the Cross ( ) represents "no" or cancel. This was famously inverted in Western releases, where the Cross became the primary "select" button.
  • Massive Library of Exclusives: Japan saw an estimated 2,365 exclusive PS1 titles that were never released internationally. These included unique genres like "Yarudora" visual novels and specific RPGs like Ark the Lad.
  • The PocketStation: Japan received a unique peripheral called the PocketStation
     in 1999. It was a miniature handheld device that acted as both a memory card and a way to play LCD minigames from main titles like Final Fantasy VIII
  • Unique Hardware Models: Japan had several exclusive hardware versions, such as the Net Yaroze (a matte black development kit for hobbyists) and the 
  • SCPH-5903, the only PS1 model capable of playing Video CDs (VCDs) natively.
