Collection: Super Famicom
The Super Famicom (SFC) is Nintendo’s 16-bit home console released in Japan on November 21, 1990, serving as the successor to the Famicom. Known for its sleek, grey-white, rounded design with colorful buttons, it became a massive success, featuring iconic games like Super Mario World. It was marketed as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) overseas.
- The "Launch Day Frenzy" Law: The console's release on Wednesday, November 21, 1990, was so chaotic that it disrupted Tokyo's transit system and caused massive absenteeism from work and school. As a result, the Japanese government requested that video game companies only launch new hardware on weekends.
- The Father of PlayStation's Contribution: The console's advanced 16-bit sound chip, the Sony SPC700, was secretly designed by Sony engineer Ken Kutaragi. Sony executives were initially furious about his "side project," but this collaboration eventually paved the way for the creation of the original PlayStation.
- Satellite Gaming via Satellaview: Released only in Japan in 1995, the Satellaview was a modem add-on that allowed users to download exclusive games and magazines via satellite broadcast. It even featured "SoundLink" games where voice acting was streamed in real-time alongside gameplay.
- Protection from the Yakuza: Because demand was so high and supply was limited to just 300,000 units at launch, Nintendo reportedly shipped the consoles at night to avoid being targeted for robbery by Yakuza criminal organizations.
- A "Bag of Bread" Design: The original rounded Japanese design was famously criticized by Nintendo of America's product designer, Lance Barr. He claimed the Super Famicom looked like a "bag of bread" when stacked, which led to the boxy, purple-accented redesign for the North American SNES
