Collection: Famicom Disc

The Famicom Disk System (FDS), released in 1986 as a Japan-exclusive peripheral for the Family Computer, utilized proprietary double-sided floppy disks to offer expanded storage and the first-ever "save game" feature for home consoles. By connecting via a RAM adapter, it allowed players to access more complex games than standard cartridges of the time could handle, while providing a much cheaper alternative for consumers who could rewrite their disks at "Disk Writer" kiosks in retail stores. 

• The Disk Writer Kiosks: For only 500 yen (about $4–$5 USD), players could take an old disk to a yellow vending machine in a toy store and have a brand-new game written onto it. 
• A "Warm" Soundtrack: The FDS added an extra FM synthesis sound channel to the Famicom, giving its games deeper bass and richer music than their cartridge counterparts.
• The Mascot "Diskun": The system had its own mascot, a yellow square character named Diskun (Mr. Disk), who appeared on the packaging and even had his own Nintendo-themed prizes. 
• The "NINTENDO" Logo Cutout: The physical disks had the word "NINTENDO" molded into the plastic at the bottom; the console had matching plastic protrusions inside that acted as a physical copy protection lock. 
• Disk Errors: The system used a belt-driven motor that was notoriously prone to breaking over time, leading to the infamous "Error 02" message that haunts many modern collectors.
