Collection: FM TOWNS
The FM Towns is a Japanese personal computer manufactured by Fujitsu from 1989 to 1997. It is historically significant for being the first computer in the world to include a CD-ROM drive as a standard feature in every unit.
In 1993, Fujitsu released the FM Towns Marty, which is considered the world’s first 32-bit home video game console. It was a "consolized" version of the computer that was backward-compatible with most FM Towns games. Despite its power, it struggled commercially due to its high price (approx. ¥98,000 or $700) and lack of exclusive titles.
- Named After a Nobel Prize Winner: The "Towns" name was the original internal code name for the system, inspired by Charles Hard Townes, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist who helped invent the laser. This was a nod to the computer's reliance on laser-based CD-ROM technology. Fujitsu dropped the "e" from his last name to make the pronunciation clearer for Japanese users.
- The World's First Standalone 32-bit Console: When the FM Towns Marty launched in 1993, it became the first 32-bit home video game system. While earlier systems like the Sega CD or Commodore CDTV existed, they were either add-ons or technically considered 16/32-bit hybrids; the Marty was the first dedicated 32-bit console to hit the market.
- A "Car Marty" for Your Dashboard: Fujitsu released a special portable version called the FM Towns Car Marty specifically for vehicles. It featured built-in satellite navigation and an optional detachable LCD screen, allowing passengers to play games or use navigation software while on the road.
- No Copy Protection: One of the most unusual aspects for collectors today is that FM Towns software was not copy-protected. Because the system was so expensive and obscure outside Japan, Fujitsu likely didn't see piracy as a major threat, making it one of the easiest retro systems to run backups on today.
- A CD-ROM Pioneer: The original FM Towns PC was the first computer in the world to include a CD-ROM drive as a standard feature in every unit. It could boot its graphical operating system, TownsOS, directly from a CD a full eight years before Microsoft's Windows 95 standardized bootable CD-ROM behavior.
