Collection: GameBoy

Released in 1989, the Game Boy was the revolution that defined handheld gaming, combining a simple 8-bit processor with a durable, brick-like design. Created by Gunpei Yokoi and Nintendo’s R&D1 team, it intentionally used a monochrome, "pea-soup" green reflective screen rather than a backlit color display to ensure massive battery life (up to 30 hours on four AAs). Its success proved that portable gameplay and a strong library of titles were more important to consumers than cutting-edge technical specs.

  • The Tetris Coup: Nintendo's decision to bundle Tetris with every system in the West is credited for its massive appeal across all ages and genders, not just children.
  • Survived an Explosion: A famous Game Boy survived a barracks bombing during the Gulf War; despite its melted shell, it still functions perfectly and is on display at the Nintendo NY store.
  • Space Traveler: Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Serebrov took his Game Boy to the Mir Space Station in 1993, where it orbited the Earth over 3,000 times.
  • Camera & Printer: Long before smartphones, Nintendo released a cartridge that turned the Game Boy into a digital camera, along with a thermal printer to "develop" the low-res grain photos.
  • Gunpei’s Philosophy: The system was built on the concept of "Lateral Thinking with Withered Technology," using cheap, mature components in creative ways to make a product affordable and indestructible.
