Collection: N64

The Nintendo 64 (N64), released in 1996, was Nintendo's third home console and a pioneer in the transition from 2D to 3D gaming. Named for its 64-bit central processing unit, it used ROM cartridges rather than the CDs favored by competitors like Sony and Sega. It is best remembered for introducing the analog stick as a standard for 3D movement and for its unique three-pronged controller designed for four-player local multiplayer.

  • The "N" Logo Geometry: As mentioned earlier, the 3D "N" logo contains exactly 64 faces and 64 vertices, a mathematical nod to the console's name.
  • A "Trident" for Three Hands: The controller was designed with three grips because Nintendo wasn't sure if players would prefer the traditional D-pad or the new analog stick; the middle grip was specifically for 3D games.
  • Last of the Cartridges: It was the last major home console to use cartridges as its primary storage medium until the Nintendo Switch arrived two decades late.
  • The Mario "Anti-Piracy" Face: In Super Mario 64, the famous interactive Mario head on the start screen was actually a tech demo created to show off the system’s ability to handle real-time 3D stretching and physics.
  • GoldenEye’s Tiny Team: One of the console's most iconic games, GoldenEye 007, was developed by a team of only nine people, most of whom had never worked on a video game before.
