Collection: PCEngine
Released in Japan on October 30, 1987, by NEC Home Electronics and Hudson Soft, the PC Engine is a revolutionary, compact 8-bit console with 16-bit graphics capabilities. It was a massive success in Japan, competing strongly against Nintendo's Famicom, and was known for its sleek design, HuCard media, and pioneering CD-ROM add-ons.
- It's a Record Breaker: It remains the smallest major home console ever made, measuring only about 14cm x 14cm (5.5 inches square).
- The "16-Bit" Secret: While marketed as a 16-bit powerhouse in the West (as the TurboGrafx-16), it actually uses an 8-bit CPU paired with dual 16-bit graphics chips.
- CD-ROM Pioneer: In 1988, it became the first console in history to have a CD-ROM add-on, allowing for high-quality music and animated cutscenes years before its competitors.
- Credit Card Games: Instead of bulky cartridges, games came on HuCards—slim, plastic cards about the size of a credit card that could fit in your wallet.
- The One-Port Wonder: The console only has one controller port. To play with friends, you had to buy a "TurboTap" adapter, which allowed up to five players at once.
