Collection: Playstation 2
Released in Japan on March 4, 2000, for ¥39,800, the PlayStation 2 (PS2) is the best-selling console in history. It featured a 128-bit "Emotion Engine" for advanced 3D graphics, built-in DVD playback, and full backward compatibility with original PlayStation games. The launch was a massive cultural event with over a million units sold in just a few days, causing significant retail shortages.
- The Matrix Outsold the Games: At launch, the PS2’s best-selling piece of software in Japan wasn’t a game—it was the DVD of The Matrix. Since standalone DVD players were expensive, many Japanese consumers bought the PS2 primarily as an affordable, high-quality movie player.
- The "1-2-3-4" Launch Date: Sony strategically released the console on March 4, 2000. In the Japanese calendar, this was the 12th year of the Heisei era, making the official date 12/3/4 (Heisei 12, March 4th).
- A "Sensitive Item" for Export: In 2000, the Japanese government reportedly placed the PS2 on a list of sensitive technology exports. There were concerns its advanced "Emotion Engine" processor could be repurposed for military uses, such as missile guidance systems.
- The Japan-Only "PSX" Hybrid: Japan received a unique version of the console called the PSX (DESR models) [Previous Turn]. It was a sleek, white device that combined a PS2 with a digital video recorder (DVR) and DVD burner, and it was the first Sony product to feature the famous XrossMediaBar (XMB) menu interface later seen on the PS3 and PSP.
- Recognized as "Future Heritage": In 2024, the National Museum of Nature and Science in Tokyo officially added the PS2 to its Future Technology Heritage registry. It was the first video game console ever selected for this honor, cited for its role in popularizing the DVD format and its immense cultural impact.
