Collection: Wii U

Released on December 8, 2012, in Japan, the Wii U is Nintendo's eighth-generation home console, featuring the touchscreen-enabled GamePad. Available in "Basic" (white, 8GB) and "Premium" (black, 32GB) sets, it was the first Nintendo system to support 1080p graphics, sold roughly 3.34 million units in Japan, and is region-locked.

  • Inspired by Karaoke: The concept for the Wii U GamePad was actually inspired by Japanese karaoke machine remotes. Like selecting songs on a handheld tablet while the lyrics appear on a main TV screen, Nintendo wanted to replicate that "dual-screen" social experience in gaming.
  • The "Bustling" Plaza: The console's home screen, WaraWara Plaza, gets its name from the Japanese onomatopoeia "wara wara," which describes the sound and sight of a bustling, chattering crowd. It was designed to make the console feel like a communal gathering space for Mii characters.
  • A "Sensor-less" Launch: Unlike in North America, standard Japanese Wii U bundles did not include a sensor bar. Nintendo correctly assumed that most Japanese households already owned a Wii and could simply reuse their existing sensor bar.
  • Japan-Exclusive Hardware: Japan was the only region where you could buy a White Premium Set (32 GB) brand new at retail. In the West, the white console was almost strictly reserved for the 8 GB Basic model, with 32 GB white units only appearing later as refurbished items.
  • Exclusive Games: Several major titles remained exclusive to the Japanese Wii U, including a physical version of Wii Karaoke U, dedicated entries in the Taiko no Tatsujin (Drum Master) series, and even a unique Yakuza 1 & 2 HD remaster.
