Collection: X68000

The Sharp X68000 is a legendary 16/32-bit Japanese home computer released in 1987, renowned for its incredible 2D arcade-perfect ports and unique twin-tower design. Often called the "Japanese Amiga," it was powered by a 10MHz Motorola 68000 CPU, with many models featuring a custom GPU, Yamaha sound, and early software-controlled power shutdown.

  • Motorized "Soft-Eject" Floppies: It was incredibly futuristic for 1987, featuring motorized 5.25-inch floppy drives. You didn't push a lever to get your disk out; the computer would mechanically eject the disk via software command, much like a modern car CD player.
  • A Built-in "Fade to Black": It was one of the first systems with a software-controlled power switch. When you pressed the power button, the computer didn't just cut out; it signaled the OS to save your work, then physically faded the screen to black and the volume to silence before finally clicking itself off.
  • The Development Kit for the Arcades: The X68000 wasn't just a great way to play arcade games; it was the machine used to make them. Capcom used the X68000 as the primary development workstation for their legendary CPS-1 arcade board, which powered hits like Street Fighter II and Final Fight.
  • The "Manhattan" Tower Design: The iconic dual-tower case was designed to look like a pair of high-tech skyscrapers. It even featured a retractable carrying handle hidden between the two towers, making it surprisingly portable for a 10kg (22lb) workstation.
  • A "Public Domain" Resurrection: After Sharp discontinued the line, they officially released the Human68k OS, C compiler suites, and BIOS ROMs into the public domain. This rare move by a major corporation allowed the enthusiast community to legally keep the system alive through emulation and new software development for decades.
