The Nintendo Family Computer Disk System (FDS), released exclusively in Japan on February 21, 1986, is a peripheral for the Famicom that uses proprietary floppy disks called "Disk Cards". It was designed to provide cheaper games, larger storage capacity, and the ability to save progress features that were difficult or expensive for cartridges at the time.
