Released in Japan on August 20, 1993, the Pioneer LaserActive CLD-A100 is a sophisticated multi-format hybrid player that remains one of the most unique pieces of home entertainment hardware ever produced. It functions primarily as a high-end LaserDisc and CD player, but its true power lies in its modular "PAC" slots, which allow it to become a fully functional video game console.
By inserting the Mega-LD PAC (Sega) or LD-ROM² PAC (NEC), the system can play standard Sega Genesis/Mega Drive or TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine games, as well as exclusive LaserActive ROM discs that feature high-quality FMV backgrounds with overlayed game graphics. Because of its massive size, premium build quality, and specialized internal components, the unit alone weighs approximately 26.5 lbs (12 kg), making it a formidable centerpiece for any high-end Japanese electronics collection.
