Explore the tropical Alola region in Pokémon Sun, the seventh-generation entry that introduced some of the biggest changes to the traditional Pokémon formula. Released in Japan on November 18, 2016 and published by The Pokémon Company / Nintendo, the game sends players across four naturally formed islands and one artificial island as they complete the Island Challenge, battle powerful Totem Pokémon, confront Team Skull and the Aether Foundation, and uncover the mysteries surrounding the legendary Pokémon Solgaleo and the Ultra Beasts. New features include Alolan regional forms, powerful Z-Moves, Poké Ride, and a completely redesigned progression system that replaces the traditional Gym structure.

Gamer Fact: Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon introduced regional forms to the series, giving familiar Pokémon such as Raichu, Exeggutor, and Marowak new appearances, typings, and abilities adapted to the Alola region. They also removed the long-running requirement to teach Pokémon Hidden Machine moves for overworld traversal. Instead, Poké Ride allows players to summon specific Pokémon for tasks such as surfing, smashing rocks, and crossing difficult terrain without occupying moveslots on the player's battle team.
