Collection: PSVita

The PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) launched in Japan on December 17, 2011, as the high-powered successor to the PlayStation Portable (PSP). Unlike its performance in Western markets, the Vita maintained a strong, dedicated fanbase in Japan for years, leading to a massive library of Japan-exclusive physical releases, particularly in the JRPG and visual novel genres.

  • Designed by the "Father" of the Walkman: The aesthetic of the PS Vita was overseen by Takashi Sogabe, a veteran designer at Sony with 27 years of experience who was also responsible for the design of the original 1979 Sony Walkman.
  • The "O" is for OK: In Japan, the console follows the traditional Japanese PlayStation button logic where the Circle (O) button is used for "Confirm" and the Cross (X) button for "Cancel"—the exact opposite of Western units.
  • Hidden Symbols in the Hardware: If you look closely at the rear touchpad, the textured surface is actually made up of 1,638 tiny PlayStation symbols (tiny Cross, Circle, Triangle, and Square icons).
  • A Rainbow of Colors: While North America and Europe primarily saw black, blue, and white models, Japan received dozens of exclusive colors and limited editions, including Lime Green/White, Khaki/Black, and a special Final Fantasy XIV edition.
  • Survival through "Otaku" Culture: While the Vita struggled globally, it survived in Japan for years thanks to a dedicated "Otaku" fanbase that supported a massive library of JRPGs and visual novels that were never released in the West.
