The Nintendo GameCube (often called NGC, GCN, or GC) is a 6th-generation home video game console released by Nintendo between 2001 and 2002. Known for its small, boxy design, it competed with the PS2 and Xbox. It featured iconic, exclusive games and was the first Nintendo console to use optical media (miniDVDs) rather than cartridges.

• The Handle's Purpose: The built-in handle was specifically designed to encourage kids to bring the console to their friends' houses, emphasizing local multiplayer.
• Hidden Menu Music: If you hold down the "Z" button on one controller while turning the system on, the standard startup sound is replaced by a playful squeaky-toy jingle. Holding "Z" on four controllers simultaneously triggers a Japanese-style drum and chant startup.
• The "Dolphin" Codename: The GameCube's development name was "Project Dolphin," which is why the main processor is named "Gekko" and the GPU is named "Flipper."
• The Panasonic Q: In Japan, Nintendo licensed the technology to Panasonic to create the "Q," a hybrid GameCube that featured a built-in DVD player and a sleek silver shell with a front-loading tray.
• Mini-DVD Choice: Nintendo opted for 8cm mini-DVDs instead of standard DVDs primarily to curb software piracy, though it limited the storage capacity to roughly 1.5GB compared to the 4.7GB on a PS2 disc.
