Collection: Dreamcast
The Sega Dreamcast launched in Japan on November 27, 1998. As Sega's final home console, it is renowned for its innovative features, including being the first system to include a built-in modular modem for online play
- The "Uncool" Marketing Campaign: To build buzz before the November 1998 launch, Sega ran a series of self-deprecating commercials starring Hidekazu Yukawa (Sega's then-Senior Managing Director). In these ads, Yukawa-san overheard children calling Sega "uncool" and praising PlayStation, which became a viral sensation and led to him appearing on the console's box art.
- Auspicious Orange Logo: While the North American logo is red and the European version is blue, the Japanese Dreamcast features an orange spiral. This color was chosen specifically for the Japanese market because it is considered lucky/auspicious.
- Startup Sound by a Legend: The iconic, ambient startup chime of the Dreamcast was composed by the world-renowned Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto. Sakamoto was a founding member of the influential electronic band Yellow Magic Orchestra.
- Supply Shortages at Launch: Despite high anticipation, Sega was only able to ship 150,000 units for the Japanese launch instead of the intended 500,000. This was due to high failure rates in manufacturing the NEC PowerVR2 graphics chips, which severely hampered Sega's ability to build an early lead over the upcoming PlayStation 2.
- Extended Life & Indie Support: Although discontinued worldwide in 2001, the Dreamcast remained popular in Japan for years. The final officially licensed game, Karous, was released in Japan on March 8, 2007—nearly six years after the console was officially dead in the West.
