Collection: Neo Geo Pocket

The Neo Geo Pocket (NGP) and its successor, the Neo Geo Pocket Color (NGPC), were SNK's 16-bit entries into the handheld market. Released in 1998 (monochrome) and 1999 (color), the systems were designed to bring SNK's arcade-style experiences to a portable format. They are most famous for their "click stick"—a microswitched thumbstick that provided highly precise, 8-way directional control ideal for the system's many fighting games.

  • Legendary Battery Life: The system could run for a staggering 40 hours on just two AA batteries, significantly outlasting many of its contemporaries.
  • Dual-Battery System: In addition to the main AAs, it used a CR2032 button battery to maintain its internal clock and save console settings—a feature similar to the Sega Saturn.
  • Built-in Fortune Teller: The console’s firmware included several non-gaming features, such as a horoscope generator, world clock, and alarm system accessible from the "Pocket Menu".
  • Dreamcast Connectivity: Through a special link cable, the NGPC could connect to the Sega Dreamcast, allowing players to transfer data and unlock bonuses in titles like King of Fighters R-2 and SNK vs. Capcom.
  • A "Bold" Marketing Strategy: In Japan, the NGPC used the edgy catchphrase: "I'm not BOY. There comes a time when someone leaves BOY," a direct jab at Nintendo's dominant Game Boy line.
