Collection: Mega Drive

The Sega Mega Drive was released in Japan on October 29, 1988, for ¥21,000, serving as the 16-bit successor to the Master System. Known for its "AV Intelligent Terminal" branding, the Japanese model (HAA-2510) featured a headphone jack with volume control, a cartridge lock, and blue-buttoned controllers. It struggled against competitors in Japan despite its technical strengths.

• A Master of Disguise: Due to legal and cultural barriers, the console was released under several different names. While most of the world knew it as the Mega Drive, it was renamed the Genesis in North America because of a trademark dispute with another hardware company. In South Korea, it was distributed by Samsung as the Super Gam*Boy and later the Super Aladdin Boy. 
• The First to "Rate" Games: Before the universal ESRB system existed, Sega created the Videogame Rating Council (VRC) in response to the controversy over the violence in Mortal Kombat. This was a first for the industry and helped parents identify appropriate content for their children. 
• Arcade Heritage: The system's hardware was heavily based on Sega’s own System 16 arcade board. This allowed for nearly perfect home ports of arcade hits like Altered Beast and Golden Axe, which helped the console stand out against Nintendo's older 8-bit NES at launch. 
• Digital Trailblazer: Long before the era of modern digital storefronts, the Sega Channel (launched in 1994) allowed players to download and play games via their cable TV connection. Subscribers could access a rotating library of around 50 games every month. 
• Brazil's Undying Favorite: The Mega Drive is exceptionally popular in Brazil, where it was distributed by Tectoy. Because of high taxes on newer imported electronics, the console remained in continuous production there far longer than anywhere else, with the last units only being discontinued in May 2023.
