Collection: Wonderswan
The WonderSwan is a Japanese-exclusive, 16-bit handheld console released by Bandai in 1999, designed by Game Boy creator Gunpei Yokoi. It was known for its low cost, long battery life (30+ hours), and unique ability to play games in both vertical and horizontal orientations. It featured a strong library of anime and RPG titles.
- Vertical Gameplay: Its most striking feature is its "dual-orientation" design. Because of its extra sets of buttons, you can flip the console 90 degrees to play certain games (like shooters or puzzle titles) in a portrait/vertical mode.
- Insane Battery Life: The original monochrome WonderSwan could run for up to 40 hours on just a single AA battery. This efficiency was a core part of its design philosophy, prioritizing playtime over high-power color screens.
- The "Gunpey" Tribute: One of the system's most popular puzzle games is called Gunpey. It was developed by Yokoi's company (Koto Laboratory) and named in his honor after he tragically passed away before the console's launch.
- PlayStation Connection: Using an accessory called the WonderWave, the WonderSwan could actually exchange data with Sony's PocketStation (a memory card peripheral for the PS1).
- Personalized Profile: When you first turn on the system, it asks for your name, birth date, and even your blood type. This data was saved into the hardware and could be used by certain games to personalize the experience.
