Nintendo 3DS

The Nintendo 3DS, released in 2011, expanded Nintendo’s dual-screen handheld design with one major trick: stereoscopic 3D that could be viewed without glasses. Along with its touchscreen, Circle Pad, motion controls, cameras, wireless features and backward compatibility with most Nintendo DS games, the 3DS became home to one of Nintendo’s strongest portable libraries.

• Glasses-Free 3D: The upper screen uses stereoscopic technology to create a visible sense of depth without requiring 3D glasses. A physical 3D Depth Slider lets players adjust the effect or turn it off entirely.

• StreetPass: One of the system’s most unique features allows nearby 3DS systems to automatically exchange compatible game data while carried around in Sleep Mode. Players could trade Miis, high scores and other game-specific information simply by walking past another owner. StreetPass still works today because it uses local communication between systems rather than Nintendo’s discontinued online service.

• The CTR Hardware Code: The original Nintendo 3DS carries the hardware designation CTR-001, with accessories following the same CTR naming convention. Nintendo continued the tradition of giving its hardware internal model-code families, much like the DS used the NTR prefix.

• A DS Library Built In: With only a small number of exceptions involving accessories that used the original DS Game Boy Advance slot, the Nintendo 3DS can play Nintendo DS and DSi game cartridges, giving it access to an enormous library across two handheld generations.

• More Than Just Games: The original system included cameras, a gyroscope and motion sensor, StreetPass Mii Plaza and augmented-reality features. Later system updates added the Nintendo eShop, an Internet browser, QR-code support and additional software functionality.
