The Japanese Sega Saturn, released on November 22, 1994, was a 32-bit, CD-ROM-based console that dominated the Japanese market in the mid-90s with over 5.75 million units sold. It is highly regarded for its 2D arcade-perfect ports and large library of exclusive, mostly Japanese-language titles.

• It Outsold the Nintendo 64: While the Saturn struggled globally, it maintained a strong second-place position in Japan for years, ultimately surpassing the Nintendo 64's Japanese lifetime sales of 5.54 million units
• A Library of Hidden Gems: The console hosted 1,046 games in total, but a staggering 785 of those titles were exclusive to Japan. This included iconic series like Sakura Wars and high-quality arcade ports that never saw a Western release.
• Launch Day Dominance: At its Japanese launch on November 22, 1994, the Saturn sold 170,000 units on its first day. It initially outsold the Sony PlayStation by nearly a 2:1 margin due to the massive popularity of its pack-in title, Virtua Fighter.
• The "Virtua Fighter" Effect: Virtua Fighter 2 remains the best-selling game for the system in Japan, with roughly 1.7 to 2.5 million copies sold. Its popularity was so immense that it reportedly influenced Sony to focus the PlayStation hardware more heavily on 3D polygon graphics.
• Unique Hardware Variants: Unlike the standardized black units in the West, Japan received several unique models, including the iconic white "Model 2" with pink and blue buttons, and licensed variants like the Hi-Saturn  (manufactured by Hitachi) and the V-Saturn  (manufactured by Victor/JVC).
