Rise from the grave and transform into monstrous beasts in Jūōki, the Japanese PC Engine CD-ROM² adaptation of Sega's arcade classic Altered Beast. Released in Japan on September 22, 1989 and published by NEC Avenue, the game follows a resurrected warrior summoned by Zeus to rescue Athena from the demon god Neff. Players battle through side-scrolling stages filled with undead creatures, collect Spirit Balls to increase their strength, and transform into powerful beast forms with unique attacks before confronting each stage's boss.
Gamer Fact: The PC Engine CD-ROM² version was released one week before the HuCARD version and includes a narrated story introduction not found in the card release. It also has an unusual compatibility quirk: early copies were designed around System Card Ver. 1.0, and some later System Card versions can cause the game to stop progressing at the first boss unless the disc is a corrected revision. NEC later offered replacement discs to affected owners.
What's Included:
- Original Japanese Jūōki PC Engine CD-ROM² Game Disc
- Original PC Engine Jewel Case with Artwork
Compatibility Note: This is an authentic Japanese PC Engine CD-ROM² release. PC Engine and TurboGrafx CD game discs themselves are not region-locked, so this Japanese disc can run on compatible North American TurboGrafx-CD or TurboDuo hardware. However, this specific title has a documented System Card compatibility issue with some later card revisions, so correct CD system software or a compatible setup is required for reliable play.
