Smash through prehistoric enemies with your oversized head in PC Genjin, Hudson Soft’s colorful side-scrolling action game for the PC Engine. Released in Japan on December 15, 1989 and published by Hudson Soft, the game follows the caveman hero Genjin as he battles dinosaurs, monsters, and strange prehistoric creatures across a series of increasingly bizarre stages. Genjin attacks primarily by headbutting enemies, can perform aerial dives, and powers up into stronger forms that change his appearance and abilities.

Gamer Fact: PC Genjin became one of the PC Engine’s signature character games and was localized in North America as Bonk’s Adventure. The Japanese title itself is a joke: “Genjin” means primitive man or caveman, while “PC” directly references the PC Engine hardware, effectively making the hero’s name a console-specific pun.

Japanese PC Engine HuCARDs are not directly compatible with a stock North American TurboGrafx-16 because the HuCARD and TurboChip interfaces use different pin assignments. Playing this game on an original North American TurboGrafx-16 requires a compatible HuCARD/TurboChip converter, an internal region modification, or modern hardware designed to support both Japanese and North American card formats.
