Prepare for one of the strangest holiday experiences in Sega history with a wonderfully bizarre piece of Japanese Dreamcast memorabilia! Released exclusively in Japan on December 16, 1999, Christmas Seaman: Omoi o Tsutaeru Mou Hitotsu no Houhou transformed Vivarium’s famously unsettling virtual pet into an interactive Christmas messaging service. Using the Dreamcast’s built-in modem, players could record and send a personal holiday greeting to another user, with a Santa-costumed Seaman acting as the sarcastic, man-faced messenger. The complete Message Kit included separate discs used to create and receive the greeting, turning the package into an unusually ambitious digital Christmas card.
Available only during a brief period in December 1999, Christmas Seaman perfectly captures Sega’s fearless and experimental approach to online console entertainment. Although its original network functionality is no longer operational, its distinctive seasonal artwork, unusual two-disc concept and connection to one of the Dreamcast’s most infamous cult classics make it a fascinating display piece. It stands as an essential addition for dedicated Dreamcast collectors, Seaman enthusiasts and anyone seeking the weirdest corners of Japanese gaming history.
