Darius Plus

Battle through a branching galaxy of mechanical sea creatures in Darius Plus, the HuCARD adaptation of Taito's landmark horizontal shoot-'em-up. Released in Japan on September 21, 1990 and published by NEC Avenue under license from Taito, the game was developed by Bits Laboratory and compresses the original arcade game's enormous three-screen battlefield into a single-screen home version. Players pilot the Silver Hawk through multiple routes, collect upgrades for forward fire, bombs, and defensive shielding, and choose between branching stages after defeating each of the game's massive aquatic-inspired bosses.

Gamer Fact: Darius Plus is unusual because the same HuCARD runs on both a standard PC Engine and the more powerful PC Engine SuperGrafx. When played on SuperGrafx hardware, the game takes advantage of the system's additional sprite capabilities to reduce the flickering seen during busy scenes and boss battles. It is widely regarded as the only commercially released PC Engine HuCARD designed to gain enhanced performance when used on a SuperGrafx.

Compatibility Note: This is an authentic Japanese PC Engine HuCARD release. Japanese PC Engine HuCARDs are not directly compatible with a stock North American TurboGrafx-16 because the HuCARD and TurboChip interfaces use different pin assignments. Playing this game on an original North American TurboGrafx-16 requires a compatible HuCARD/TurboChip converter, an internal region modification, or modern hardware designed to support both Japanese and North American card formats. The game also runs on Japanese PC Engine SuperGrafx hardware, where it receives enhanced sprite handling and reduced flicker.
