Hisou Kihei Xserd

Command a squad of advanced combat mecha against an alien invasion in Hisou Kihei Xserd, a turn-based science-fiction strategy game for the PC Engine. Released in Japan on February 23, 1990 and published by Masaya / Nippon Computer Systems, the game places players in command of the mobile fortress carrier ALTEA and a team of specialized SERD units. Across 10 tactical scenarios, each machine has different movement, attack range, and battlefield roles, while pilots gradually improve their combat effectiveness through experience.

Gamer Fact: Hisou Kihei Xserd arrived before both the original Super Robot Wars and Fire Emblem, making it an early example of the console-based mecha strategy format that would become far more prominent in the 1990s. Its combat system also unusually handles character growth: experience improves a pilot's attack accuracy and evasion rather than simply increasing the unit's durability. The lead X-SERD unit can also transform between humanoid and flight forms, changing its movement and combat characteristics.
