Breathe fire and battle through a bizarre world of monsters, traps, and hidden treasures in Karnov, the Famicom adaptation of Data East’s 1987 arcade action game. Released in Japan on December 18, 1987 and published by Namco, the game follows the superhuman strongman Karnov as he travels through side-scrolling stages filled with enemies, environmental hazards, and collectible tools. Players can use items such as ladders, bombs, wings, and shields to reach new areas and survive increasingly difficult encounters.

Gamer Fact: The Famicom version was not a simple one-to-one arcade port. It was co-developed by Data East and SAS Sakata, with programming handled by Sakata, and it changes several gameplay details from the arcade original. Karnov can survive more damage, stage layouts were reworked for the home system, and the game uses Namco’s cartridge hardware rather than Data East publishing it directly in Japan.
