Released in Japan on December 29, 1994, the Neo Geo CD Top Loader (model CD-T01 / CD-T02) is the most widely recognized and common version of SNK's CD-based console. Designed as a more cost-effective successor to the expensive, limited-run front-loading model, it features a manual pop-up lid for disc swapping, which significantly reduced manufacturing costs and mechanical failure rates.

While it retains the original 1x speed drive, resulting in the system's infamous, lengthy loading times, it allowed a broader audience to experience arcade-perfect ports of hits like The King of Fighters and Metal Slug with high-fidelity arranged soundtracks. Its sleek, compact design and more affordable price point made it the primary hardware for SNK's transition into the disc era, and it remains the standard entry point for collectors today.
