Released in Japan on May 4, 2013, the Neo Geo X Gold is a limited-edition handheld and home console hybrid developed by Tommo under license from SNK Playmore. The "Gold" bundle includes a handheld unit with a 4.3-inch screen pre-loaded with 20 classic Neo Geo titles, a docking station modeled after the original AES console, and a specialized arcade stick with clicky microswitches.
While the docking station acts as a charging base and HDMI output for television play, the system itself utilizes an internal Linux-based emulator to run games from SD-style "Game Cards." In Japan, the "Gold" set was particularly notable for including a bonus Ninja Master's game card, and though it faced criticism for its emulation quality compared to original hardware, it remains a popular collector's item for its faithful 1:1 scale replicas of the iconic 1990s SNK aesthetics.
