Quarth

Fuse quick reflexes with puzzle strategy in Quarth, Konami's distinctive action-puzzle game for the Famicom. Released in Japan on April 13, 1990 and published by Konami, the game places the player at the bottom of a vertically scrolling field where incomplete block formations steadily descend toward the ship. Instead of simply shooting enemies, players fire square blocks upward to complete rectangles and squares, causing the finished shapes to disappear. Larger clears and carefully constructed combinations reward higher scores, while increasingly crowded patterns demand faster planning and precise positioning.

Gamer Fact: Quarth began as a Konami arcade game in 1989 and was released outside Japan under the alternate title Block Hole. Its unusual design combines elements of a vertically oriented shooter with geometric puzzle mechanics, creating a style of play quite different from conventional falling-block games. The concept was later adapted to several Japanese home platforms, including the Famicom, Game Boy, MSX2, and PC-98.
