Take control of an X-Wing starfighter in Star Wars: Attack on the Death Star, a Japan-exclusive space combat game created for the Sharp X68000. Released in Japan on December 13, 1991 and published by Victor Musical Industries, the game was developed by M.N.M Software and recreates the climactic Battle of Yavin from Star Wars. Players battle Imperial TIE Fighters, attack the surface of the Death Star, and finally race through the trench to launch the proton torpedo that can destroy the station. The game uses fast wireframe 3D graphics and sampled dialogue from the film to recreate the atmosphere of the original Death Star assault.
Gamer Fact: Star Wars: Attack on the Death Star was developed by M.N.M Software, the studio later known as Mindware, with music composed by Yuzo Koshiro. The game also allowed players to switch between multiple camera viewpoints during play, a feature that later became part of a Japanese patent dispute involving Sega's viewpoint-change patent for 3D games. Attack on the Death Star was cited as earlier prior art, and the patent was ultimately revoked.
