Super Darius

Take on Taito's legendary branching shoot-'em-up from home with Super Darius, an ambitious adaptation of the original arcade Darius. Released in Japan on March 16, 1990, for the PC Engine CD-ROM² and published by NEC Avenue, Super Darius sends players across a branching network of stages aboard the Silver Hawk, battling waves of biomechanical enemies and enormous aquatic-themed war machines. The CD-ROM² release uses the extra storage capacity of the format for high-quality audio while bringing the distinctive look, music, branching paths, power-up system, and huge bosses of Taito's arcade classic to NEC's home console.

Gamer Fact: The original 1987 arcade version of Darius was designed around a massive three-screen cabinet, but only 11 different bosses ultimately appeared in the finished arcade game. Taito's designers had actually created concepts for 26 bosses during development. Super Darius resurrected those unused designs and gave all 26 zones their own boss, making this PC Engine adaptation notable for containing content that never appeared in the original arcade release.
