Super Smash Bros.

Experience the historic origin of the world's greatest multiplayer crossover phenomenon with the groundbreaking fighter that started it all. Making its debut on home console hardware in Japan on January 21, 1999, this revolutionary title completely shattered traditional fighting game rules by pitting iconic Nintendo mascots against one another. Players choose from a legendary starting lineup of eight beloved characters like Mario, Link, Samus, and Pikachu to duke it out across dynamic, interactive stages. The core gameplay completely reinvents the genre by replacing traditional health bars with a percentage damage meter, challenging you to rack up your opponent's damage to increase your knockback power and blast them right out of the arena boundaries.

Gamer Fact: The project originally began its development lifecycle as an unlicensed prototype titled Dragon King: The Fighting Game, featuring generic, featureless polygon figures instead of famous mascots. Director Masahiro Sakurai secretly added iconic Nintendo characters into the test build without initial permission, knowing that presenting the corporate brass with a game where players could control beloved company icons would be the ultimate way to get the project greenlit.

Compatibility Note: This is an authentic Japanese NTSC-J region software release. It will not boot on a standard, unmodified North American Nintendo 64 console due to physical plastic regional locking tabs located inside the US system's cartridge slot.
