Wonder Boy III - Monster Lair

Race through colorful fantasy worlds in Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair, a fast-paced adaptation of Westone's 1988 arcade game that combines side-scrolling platform action with horizontal shoot-'em-up stages. Released in Japan on August 31, 1989 and published by Hudson Soft, the game follows Leo and, in two-player mode, Princess Purapril through automatically scrolling stages filled with enemies, temporary weapon upgrades, fruit that restores a constantly draining vitality meter, and large boss encounters. Each area alternates between on-foot platforming and airborne shooting sequences, giving the game a very different structure from the RPG-influenced entries elsewhere in the Wonder Boy series.

Gamer Fact: The PC Engine CD-ROM² version was ported by Alfa System and takes advantage of the CD format for an arranged soundtrack rather than simply reproducing the arcade game's original synthesized audio. The conversion stays close to the arcade release while making some gameplay adjustments, including altered enemy placement in the final stage and changes that slightly reduce the difficulty.
