Collection: Neo Geo CD

The Neo Geo CD, released by SNK in 1994, was a more affordable version of the cartridge-based Neo Geo AES, designed to bring "arcade-perfect" gaming into homes at a lower software cost. While the original AES cartridges could cost up to $300, the CD versions retailed for around $49 to $79. However, this affordability came at the price of notoriously long loading times due to the system's slow 1x-speed CD-ROM drive

  • The Loading Icon: To make the long loading times more bearable, SNK used a "juggling" monkey icon on the loading screen, which has since become a cult symbol for the system.
  • No Copy Protection: The console has virtually no digital rights management (DRM), allowing it to play burned CD-R backups without any hardware modifications.
  • Audio CD Dual-Use: It doubles as a standard CD player, and many game discs include "Redbook" audio tracks that can be played in any normal CD player to listen to high-quality arranged soundtracks.
  • Three Distinct Models: There are three hardware versions: the rare front-loader (Japan only), the common top-loader (worldwide), and the CDZ (Japan only), which featured a faster 2x drive.
  • Region-Free Hardware: While the console itself is region-free, it is "region-aware." This means a single disc will display text in English if played on a Western console or Japanese if played on a Japanese unit.
